He missed it. The others were shut in a room when the risen Jesus turned up; Thomas was somewhere else, and came back to ten friends all talking at once about something impossible.
He did not pretend. He said exactly what he needed: to see the nail marks, to put his finger in them, to put his hand in the wound. Then he waited a week in that room with people who had seen what he had not — which is a harder place to stand than either believing or walking out.
The account is precise about what happens next. Jesus arrives, holds out his hands, and invites him to touch. It never says he did. Thomas simply answers.
He gets filed under doubt, which undersells him. He asked for evidence in proportion to the claim, and stayed in the room while he waited. The West keeps his feast on 3 July — it used to be 21 December — and the Orthodox churches on 6 October.
