Helena Kowalska took the name Faustina and spent thirteen years doing the least visible work a convent has. Cook in Warsaw. Gardener in Vilnius, growing vegetables. Then, in 1937, when tuberculosis had worn her down too far for anything heavier, the sister who answered the door in Kraków.
In July 1934 her confessor told her to write things down. She had no study, no set hour, no reader waiting. She wrote on loose sheets first, then in bound notebooks, both sides of the page — six of them, 477 pages, finished the year she died at thirty-three. Somewhere in the middle she gives away the method: she used every free moment, however short.
All of it points at one line she directed a painter to put beneath a picture in Vilnius that same year. Jesus, I trust in you.
Six notebooks to arrive at five words. That is what stopping does to a person’s language.
